Handheld Personal Alarms

Don't confuse this alarm with the normal car alarm that goes off and no one pays any attention to. These personal alarms emit the most unique, ear splitting sound I've ever heard and will get the attention of anyone around you. To get an idea of how loud 130 decibels is, I've listed some common sounds you might hear every day and their decibel levels:

Whispering is approximately 10 decibels.

Wind and leaves rustling is approximately 20 decibels.

Waves on the seashore measure approximately 40 decibels.

A women screaming measures approximately 70 decibels.

A vacuum cleaner measures approximately 80 decibels.

A jet engine measures approximately 110 decibels.

The threshold of ear pain begins at 120 decibels!

Imagine that your alone at night walking alone to your car and you get that funny feeling that your being followed. You activate the personal alarm and 130 decibels of high pitched sound fill the night air. Most attackers are going to think twice about sticking around. Criminals don't like to draw attention to themselves.

Personal Alarms vs Pepper Spray

Pepper spray has been proven to be very effective when your forced to deal with an attempted attacker or purse snatcher but it does have some drawbacks. For pepper spray to be effective it must be sprayed close to the attackers face. Sometimes you might not have the time to ready, aim, fire at your attacker. Another possible drawback is that the attacker might overpower you and use the pepper spray against you.

My recommendation to anyone is that you carry both a personal alarm and pepper spray. This gives you a good defense against attack and the total cost is around twenty bucks. With a few tools such as pepper sprays and a personal alarm,  plus awareness of your surroundings you can put yourself on the offense rather than defense.

Talking on your cellphone while walking to your car that's parked in a dark parking lot is a good example of not being aware of your surroundings. Do you really think the person on the phone is going to help you in case of an attack?
